"LOVE these pet doors! Bought first one to install in screened porch, in the screen, and teaching our cat to use it took only twice thru for her to be own her own. It went so well, bought a second one to install in the gate of our fence. Once thru it, she already knew it was a breeze! The 2 installations required some creativity in the screen and then the board-on-board gate, but neither took very long and well worth the effort. GREAT product in so many ways - highly recommend."

Not structurally sound.

"I've had this door since April/may and have gone through 4 doors because they just aren't strong enough at the hinge. Today my dog went through it not even roughly and has cracked it off again. The initial door set up is a good price but each time I need a new flap, it's $40 odd dollars to replace with postage. Will be changing to another style as I can't keep forking out dollars when they don't last."

Inherent fault with Flap

"Last night my dog broke the 3rd Essential Pet Door flap! The first flap lasted about 2 years (after many repairs), the 2nd lasted 11 months (again after repairs) and now the 3rd after 6 months. With the last flap, I immediately glued several metal brackets and reinforcing plates around the offending plastic pivot pins, hoping it would last "forever". Not so. . . In all cases the issue is the inherent problem with the strength and design of the plastic pivot pins. With the last flap I noticed some extra reinforcement had been introduced to the mould in the pin area. . . but not enough, and unsuccessfully. Oh well. . . it looks like another replacement flap order, a new approach to reinforcement and hope this one works for longer OR hope Hakuna improve their design in this area OR. . . I go searching for another brand that will do the job (which I don't want to do as they very likely wouldn't fit the hole in the door. (New door. . . I don't think so!!) SteveS"

Good value, moderate skill level for install.

"Good: Cat that wouldn’t use a hard plastic flap door will use this one. Bad: magnets won’t hold flap flat. Sits slightly diagonally letting some air through. Like previous reviewer said: tunnel liner panels are hard to fit into opposite side during final assembly. Cutting screws to length may be difficult for people without a vice. For those who haven’t cut screws before, put nut on before cutting. That way, removing the nut will help clean up any damaged threads. Latch on closure panel very difficult to unlatch."

Essential pet door is rubbish

"We bought this at Bunnings and this pet door would have to be one of the worst doors that I have ever bought. The plastic is flimsy and it took nearly 4 hours to install and had pieces breaking off. We bought a new door to install this into and will probably have to buy another door as well as a pet door. Not a good experience at all."

Design rethink of metal vs plastic

"I have had significant issue with the combination of metal and plastic. Using metal screws and plastic lugs for the essentials flap and metal bolts on plastic screws for the frame is fraught with compatibility issues.. The screws strip the lugs and the bolts, if overtightened as warned, destroy themselves on the metal bolts."

"The little plastic clip to lock the panel shut is too weak for the purpose and ours staring breaking just over one year after installing. Completely broke off a few months later and cars smart enough to escape."
